Workshop Descriptions

"Writing Within and Without Genre"
As writers, we often hear about "genres," such as teen romances or sports stories. Many critics treat "genre novels" as separate from "literary novels." So what does it mean to write within a genre, and is that what readers and publishers want from us? In this workshop, J.L. Bell examines how to understand your readers' expectations for a certain type of story, and how to work with those expectations to both surprise and satisfy those readers. After analyzing the rise and fall of various genres, the workshop will close with advice on how to keep genre storytelling from becoming generic.

"It's a Great Time for Nonfiction"
Because the Internet now makes straightforward facts so readily available, it pushes authors and publishers to be more creative and innovative than ever before as they craft and design nonfiction texts. Melissa Stewart shows how to play with structure, voice, and word choice to take your nonfiction manuscripts in exciting new directions. It's a great time for nonfiction!

"Maximum Potential: How to Make Your Manuscript into the Book It Wants To Be"
For all those who are sick of waiting for inspiration, here are tips and techniques for dealing with an unplanned stopping place. Writer and editor Lisa Papademetriou will help you explore your characters, tighten your plot(s), and make your scenes more compelling. You will discover both your strengths and weaknesses, and find ways to use them to create your best work.

"Brave New Words: Using Writing Prompts to Tap Unexplored Resources" (1-hour workshop)
This will be a hands-on workshop focused on inspiring writers to explore writing in new genres, tap memory for stories, use observation to find inspiration and have FUN. While some writers dismiss writing exercises as a waste of time, Jo Knowles's former students have expanded on writing prompts to write novels, publish essays, and discover talents for genres they'd never tried before. Participants will need to bring pen and paper and be prepared to write up a flurry of brave new words.

"Matchmaking 101: Choosing the Right Publisher"
Everyone wants to get published--does it matter by whom? The answer is a resounding yes. Publishers have different publishing climates, editors have different editing styles and preferences, and marketing and sales teams each bring something different to the table. How can you sort out the best place for your work? When the odds of publishing are so stacked against you, can you really afford to be choosy about whom you work with? And what role does size play in all this? Is your book better off at a big New York conglomerate, an imprint of a big conglomerate, or at a smaller independent house? In this workshop, Yolanda (Leroy) Scott examines the opportunities and challenges of these publishing models and explores the factors inherent in matching the right manuscript with the right editor at the right house at the right time.
