New England is an active and busy region for writers and illustrators of children's books and magazines. Read on to learn about upcoming events, critique groups, workshops, conferences and more!

You may email me with suggestions, questions and concerns. The New England Regional Advisors want to keep New England SCBWI growing, active, and supportive for both aspiring and experienced writers and illustrators.

New England States Regional Coordinator

Critique Groups

SCBWI Critique Groups are held, usually on a monthly basis, in communities throughout each region. Some groups meet in libraries; others, in homes. Each group is unique, shaped by the talents of the Critique Group Representative and the participants. An online list of SCBWI Critique Groups is updated frequently, and the New England Critique Groups Coordinator is available to help and advise prospective representatives on adding new critique groups to our network.

Email List

The New England SCBWI Email List is a great way to keep in touch with other members who have similar interests. It's also a great way to network, to find out about upcoming events and opportunities and changes in both SCBWI and the publishing industry in general. The New England SCBWI Email List is available to SCBWI members from anywhere in the world. Most announcements are about events in New England, but in our discussions we value the experience of all writers and illustrators for children.

An Email list, or listserve, is a way of communicating with a group of people via email. Instead of sending an email to one person and then seeing his or her reply, you can send an email to every member of the mailing list at once. These messages will be seen or received only by other members of the group--in this case, only SCBWI members who have subscribed.

Newsletter

The New England NEWS is a bi-monthly newsletter of the three New England Regions. Each issue of The New England NEWS carries pertinent articles, announcements of classes, art shows, competitions, publishers needs and activities throughout the area. The achievements of our members are also highlighted, and your contributions are welcomed and encouraged.

In an often lonely and isolating business, The NEWS is a lamp of encouragement, hope, and support. If you are serious about your career, it is the key that can unlock many doors.

Connections Directory

CONNECTIONS is a database of New England SCBWI authors and illustrators who are available for school and library speaking dates. This list of names, descriptions of school visit programs and contact information will be emailed to subscribers twice a year, in September and June. There is no cost to either the authors/illustrators listing with us, or the subscribers receiving this information.

Conferences

New England SCBWI offers an annual conference in the spring. Members receive reduced conference tuition. The content of the conference is a mix of presentations and workshops, designed to assist the novice and encourage the established professional. In addition, New England SCBWI organizes smaller events and workshops for writers and illustrators. Each New England region occasionally sponsors area workshops that give members opportunities to learn and to network with peers. These get-togethers range in scope from workshops on one aspect of producing children's books, to day tours, to "teas" hosted by bookstores for published New England SCBWI members.

Conference Followup - Submission Guidelines

We had a wonderful critique faculty at this year’s SCBWI New England conference! All of those publishing professionals agreed to accept submissions from conference attendees for a limited time, even if their company policies don’t normally welcome such submissions. They provided our conference organizers with descriptions of what they’re looking for and what they don’t need now.

This information is a perk of attending the SCBWI New England Conference, and will be available by email only to people who were at that event. We ask that it not be posted online or shared publicly in any other way.

2Heads Better than One?

The British publisher Egmont is making a little media splash with its new imprint 2Heads. The imprint’s website describes its strategic advantage this way:

We consult children and parents throughout the creation, writing and illustration of the books to make sure our fiction series are the best they can be.

2HEADS is different from any other imprint that currently exists because we believe that children should play a key role in shaping the series fiction that they really want to read. So we involve the readers and their parents in lots of different ways throughout the development and writing of our stories to ensure that every 2HEADS series really hits the mark with children.

On the one hand, that’s called “market research,” and it’s an aspect of most businesses that book publishing usually skips.
