The New England SCBWI Memory Fund

In July 2005, we lost two friends and passionate contributors to children's literature: Illustrator Ann Barrow and Writer Ruth Landers Glass. This loss inspired New England SCBWI to begin thinking about ways to honor these and other lost friends.

Because SCBWI was so important to both Ann and Ruth, we have decided the best way to remember these two remarkable people would be to continue their passion for helping other writers and illustrators by offering a scholarship in each of their names that would allow a writer and an illustrator to attend the New England event of their choice in the next calendar year for free.

THE ANN BARROW ILLUSTRATORS SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline April 20, 2011

Ann Barrow, an important member of SCBWI New England, illustrated over 20 children's books including Big Blue, published by Charlesbridge in 2004, Butterflies in My Garden, published by Mondo in 2003 and Growing up Abenaki, written by Joseph Bruchec, published by Rigby in 2003. Her career began in 1977 and included book jackets, children's magazines, greeting cards, giftware and portraiture. We lost her in 2006 in a tragic accident.

In her memory, SCBWI New England will award a scholarship to the 2012 New England conference.

Ann Barrow

Ann Barrow illustrated over 20 children's books including Big Blue, published by Charlesbridge in 2004, Butterflies in My Garden, published by Mondo in 2003 and Growing up Abernaki, written by Joseph Bruchec, published by Rigby in 2003. Her career began in 1977 and included book jackets, children's magazines, greeting cards, giftware and portraiture.

Professionally, Ann could be summed up by this quote on her web page:

"Ann Barrow's specialty was drawing realistic children and she captured the spirit and beauty of each subject whether the child's picture appeared on the pages of a children's book or became a family heirloom portrait."

Personally though, Ann was so much more to many, many friends, family, fellow artists and members of the children's publishing community. Ann was a driving force, a mover and a shaker, and always ready to help another member at the drop of a hat. She was an incredible friend, a motivator, and a role model.

She thoroughly modeled the professional life of an illustrator. She was a meticulous researcher who didn't cut corners or lame out when it got tough. She was a tireless promoter of her friends and family, keenly appreciating the value of all of the communities she was involved in.

To honor her memory with a contribution to her scholarship, please see the information below. The Ann Barrow Illustrators Scholarship will allow one recipient a year to attend the SCBWI: NE workshop or day event of their choice.

Ruth Landers Glass

Ruth Landers Glass was a talented silversmith as well as a writer who nurtured a generation of writers and illustrators as the founder and leader of the Children's Book Writers Group at the Newton Free Library as well at the two other groups that developed from that original one.

Many Boston area writers can trace their success back to the seeds planted and the lessons learned in one of Ruth's groups. Ruth celebrated talent and demanded excellence. As one of her critique group members, illustrator Christie Allan-Piper put it in a Boston Globe article, "Ruth was at her best when she worked with other people and made them shine. She was the midwife to other people's work."

To honor her memory with a contribution to her scholarship, please see the information below. The Ruth Landers Glass Scholarship will allow one recipient a year to attend the SCBWI: NE workshop or day event of their choice.
