Program Description
*MEET THE AUTHOR is a one-hour presentation that takes children on one author's journey to publication. Topics covered include: where ideas come from; how an idea is transformed into a good story; the writing process, from opening sentence to finished manuscript; the importance of revision; from dummies and paste-ups to bound books - how a manuscript gets published; writing as a career - how realistic is it?
*PERSONAL NARRATIVES is a forty-five minute writing workshop that demonstrates how one child's personal experience became a successful children's picture book. Students will be asked to bring to class a photograph of an important person, place, object, or event in their lives. Through classroom discussion and writing exercises, children will begin to develop their own personal narratives.
*SO YOU WANT TO WRITE FOR CHILDREN is a ninety-minute seminar for adults. It includes an introduction to writing for children (overview of genres, generating original ideas, basic elements of a satisfying story, importance of revision and critique groups) and tips on how to get your book published(overview of children's publishing market, researching publishers, determining where to submit, preparing a professional submission package).
