Role: Author; Illustrator
Short Bio: I’m an illustrator in Ipswich, MA. I currently have five published books with three new titles due out this summer! Before children's books, I worked as an animator and character designer and also taught high school and college art. Right now, I'm busy working on a handful of picture books and an animated kids video.

Program Info

Program Descriptions: MY WORKSHOP (UPPER ELEM, MIDDLE, HIGH SCHOOL) CONSISTS OF:

1. ABOUT ME/INTRO
I DISCUSS MY ART BACKGROUND, AND WHAT I DO DAY TO DAY AS A WORKING ILLUSTRATOR. WE WILL VIEW EXAMPLES OF ARTWORK AND CLIPS OF ANIMATION ON DVD.

2. MY BOOK-MAKING PROCESS
WE LOOK AT A POWERPOINT PRESENTATION OF MY WRITING AND ILLUSTRATING PROCESS… FROM IDEAS, BRAINSTORMING, AND SKETCHING TO MANUSCRIPT, DUMMY, AND FINAL ILLUSTRATIONS. I’LL DEMONSTRATE HOW I WORK, USING DIFFERENT MEDIUMS TO CREATE MY ARTWORK.

3. TYPES OF CHILDREN’S BOOKS
CONTEMPORARY CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOKS, CHAPTER BOOKS, AND GRAPHIC NOVELS WILL BE DISCUSSED. MY OWN BOOKS AND EXAMPLES FROM OTHER AUTHORS/ILLUSTRATORS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR VIEWING AND DISCUSSION. WE’LL INVESTIGATE DIFFERENCES IN STYLE AND TECHNIQUES AMONG POPULAR CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATORS.

4. HANDS ON
STUDENTS WILL GENERATE IDEAS FOR WRITING A STORY OF THEIR OWN. IT IS NOT THE GOAL OF THIS WORKSHOP TO CREATE ENTIRE STORIES OR BOOKS BUT RATHER TO GIVE STUDENTS THE INSPIRATION, IDEAS, AND BASIC CHILDREN’S BOOK TOOLS AS A STARTING POINT IN THEIR OWN CREATIVITY.

5. A CAREER IN ART
WE’LL LOOK AT THE MANY OPPORTUNITIES (NOT JUST CHILDREN’S BOOKS) A CAREER IN ART AFFORDS. I’LL BRIEFLY DISCUSS THE BUSINESS SIDE (INCLUDING SELF-PROMOTION/WEBSITES) OF ART AND THE PROS AND CONS A CAREER IN ART MIGHT BRING. THE IMPORTANCE OF ART IN EVERYDAY LIFE (OUTSIDE OF A CAREER) WILL ALSO BE DISCUSSED. IT’S GREAT IF AT THIS POINT, STUDENTS CAN SHOW EXAMPLES OF THEIR OWN WORK AND WE CAN HEAR THEIR OWN PERSONAL ASPIRATIONS.

BOOK SALES
I ASK THAT ALL SCHOOLS I VISIT CONSIDER MAKING MY BOOKS AVAILABLE TO THEIR STUDENTS AND SCHOOL LIBRARIAN. AS AN ILLUSTATOR AND AUTHOR, BOOK SALES ARE A STANDARD PART OF MY SCHOOL VISITS.

(lower elementary program coming soon!)
Program Pricing: MY 2007-2008 SCHOOL YEAR RATES ARE $300 PER HALF-DAY PRESENTATION. SCHOOLS OUTSIDE A 30 MILE RADIUS OF MY HOME IN IPSWICH, MA WILL BE CHARGED AN ADDITIONAL $30 PER HALF HOUR OF TRAVEL.
