Birds, Butterflies, and More
Grades K-4, 30-50 minutes
Based on Melissa’s award-winning A Place for Animals series, book, this suite of programs program focus on animal adaptations and how we can help theanimals around us survive.

Bringing Science to Life
Grades K-3, 45 minutes
Using Readers Theater scripts based on When Rain Falls or Under the Snow, students develop literacy skills and learn curriculum-related science concepts.

Writing Programs reinforce the Six Traits of Writing

You’ll Never Guess What Happened at Lunch: Writing Great Nonfiction
Grades 4 and up, 60 minutes
To engage an audience, nonfiction must flow clearly and logically and include strong verbs; rich, precise language; and meaningful details. In this hands-on workshop, students learn to craft prose that will interest and excite any reader.

Observe and Describe
Grades 3 and up, 60 minutes
By examining and describing natural objects and then sharing their findings, students develop stronger observational skills; learn to compare, classify, and identify key characteristics; and come to appreciate the ideas of others.

Details, Details, Details
Grades 4 and up, 60 minutes
After discussing why a writer’s first drafts often lack details, students learn and practice an easy four-step method for adding details to their writing.

Creating Nonfiction: Researching, Writing, and Revising
Grades 4 and up, 60 minutes
Students learn the basics of nonfiction writing: choosing a topic, doing research, organizing ideas, creating clear, lively prose, and improving a piece through revision. Using her books, Melissa explains the process behind interesting, fact-filled nonfiction.

Program Pricing: $800.00 per day
Melissa will do four or five programs, depending on your school day schedule. An afterschool professional development program is also available. Melissa requests 10 minutes between presentations and 30 minutes for lunch.
Special Features: Melissa is a Massachusetts Cultural Council Creative Teaching Partner, which means grants are availble to fund her programs in Massachusetts.
