Program Descriptions: Science Programs Suppeort the National Science Education Standards

A Place for Butterflies
Grades K-4, 35 minutes
Based on Melissa’s award-winning book, this program reviews butterfly basics and introduces students to ways people are helping protect butterflies and their habitats.

When Rain Falls
Grades 1-3, 35 minutes
Bring together language arts and science learning with an exciting program that includes readers theater.

Rocks and Minerals
Grades 3-6, 50 minutes
This fun, interactive program introduces students to basic information about rock types, rock formation, the rock cycle, plate tectonics, and the geologic history of Earth.

The Animals of Africa
Grades 1-6, 50 minutes
Using photos she took while on safari in Kenya and Tanzania, Melissa discusses the roles a variety of African animals play in their environment.

Writing Programs reinforce the Six Traits of Writing

Details, Details, Details
Grades 4 and up, 60 minutes
After discussing why a writer’s first drafts often lack details, students learn and practice an easy three-step method for adding details to their writing.

The Nature of Nonfiction
Grades 3 and up, 60-90 minutes
To engage their audience, writers must use rich, precise language and include meaningful details in their prose. In this hands-on workshop, students learn to apply the techniques of such celebrated nature writers as John Muir, Diane Ackerman, and Henry David Thoreau.

Creating Nonfiction: Researching, Writing, and Revising
Grades 4 and up, 60 minutes
Students learn the basics of nonfiction writing: choosing a topic; doing research; organizing ideas; creating clear, lively prose; and improving a piece through revision. Using her books as examples, Melissa explains the process behind interesting, fact-filled nonfiction.

Writer's Workshop
Grades 4 and up, four 60-minute sessions
Working in a supportive environment, children are encouraged to tap into their imaginations and develop their own narrative voices. As students share their works-in-progress, they learn from one another and gain self-confidence.

Program Pricing: $800.00 per day
Melissa will do as many programs as you can fit into your schedule. She needs 10 minutes between presentations and 30 minutes for lunch.
Special Features: Melissa is a Massachusetts Cultural Council Creative Teaching Partner, which means grants are availble to fund her programs in Massachusetts.
