TENDING TO GRACE was a big success in Laurens, SC, where a literacy team chose it from a list of young adult award winners for its ONE BOOK, ONE SUMMER program. More than 2,100 students, teachers, administrators, staff and parents read the book, and I flew to SC for a reading and learning celebration in the fall.
Here's what the Laurens curriculum coordinator had to say about the
book:
"This is truly a remarkable, beautifully written book. Our literacy team can't stop raving about it. A special needs teacher and an honors English teacher serve on this team and both are intending in-depth study next school year in addition to our school-wide celebration day in August."
And this is what a member of the staff wrote in her reading blog:
"Seeing
the effect that this one book had on our community really encouraged me.
Kids at the high school enjoyed it, and we had many students come to the middle school, looking for the book their older brothers and sisters and friends had enjoyed. It takes a particular kind of book, and a particular climate for it to work, but it's definitely worth the trouble!"
