“Words & Pictures” exhibit in Warren, RI

The Imago Foundation for the Arts will host an exhibit titled “Words & Pictures: Rhode Island Celebrates Children's Books,” from 21 February to 1 March 2008. The foundation’s Imago Gallery is at 16 Cutler Street in Warren, Rhode Island.

The exhibit features the work of children’s-book creators Mary Jane Begin, Christopher and Anika Denise, Jill Lamere, and Marlo Garnsworthy.

Children’s Literature Conference - 14 April 2007

The Children's Literature Conference featuring Jeannie Brett, Marty Kelly, Michael Daley, and Jessie Haas, takes place on Saturday, April 14th.

Our own NESCBWI member, Jeannie Brett, has illustrated titles such as L is for Lobster, A Maine Alphabet Book, One if by Land, A Massachusetts Number Book, M is for Mayflower, and P is for Passport.

Marty Kelley is the author of picture books The Rules, Winter Woes, and Summer Stinks has a talent for understanding children and their problems and deals with them humorously. His workshops share a lot and keep you laughing from start to finish.

Michael Daley is a Vermont author whose newly published Shanghaied to the Moon will delight upper elementary and secondary students and young writers. Michael will illustrate step by step from idea to finish the process of getting your book published. Michael will be accompanied by author Jessie Haas.

April Writing Classes in RI

SCBWI member Hannah Goodman reports:

I will be teaching a workshop called Releasing The Writer Within: Storytelling Through Journaling starting April 14th. Class is held in Warren, RI, about 20 minutes south of Providence, RI. This is a class geared for the beginner, advanced, and everyone in between. The foundation of the class will be unblocking writer's block and taping into the stories that are within the pages of our journals. Journalers and non-journalers alike are welcome!

ASTAL Five-Day Institute June 21-26 2007

ASTAL (The Alliance for the Study and Teaching of Adolescent Literature) at Rhode Island College has announced a new program for those interested in learning to write for young people. The five-day Institute will be held this summer on June 21, 22, 23, 25, and 26. Participants will choose between strands for fiction writing or nonfiction writing. A third strand will be available for students in grades 7-12 interested in learning to write for their peers. The instructor/mentor ratio will not exceed 1:7 to provide maximum opportunities for individualized instruction and feedback.

The program features presentations about book publishing with editors and publishers, including Kara LaReau (editor for Scholastic Books), R. James Stahl (publisher of the Merlyn’s Pen Series), and Jennifer Taber (publicist at Houghton Mifflin). They will hear from guest authors including Natalie Babbitt, Patricia Reilly Giff, Janet Taylor Lisle, Patricia McCormick, Sarah Lamstein, and Melissa Stewart. Instructors for the strands will include Tonya Bolden, Kelly Easton, Beatrice Gormley, Joyce Hansen, Mark Peter Hughes, Donna Jackson, Peter Johnson, and Liza Ketchum. I'm pleased to see the number of familiar NE-SCBWI names in this list!

Nancy White Cassidy Illustrator Workshops in VT, NJ

Illustrator Nancy White Cassidy will conduct her 5-day ILLUSTRATING CHILDREN'S BOOKS workshop in Vermont and New Jersey this summer. Children’s Book Illustration exhibit at New Art Center in Newton, MA

The New Art Center in Newton, MA, will exhibit "The Visions & Voices of Children's Book Illustrators," featuring the work of thirteen contemporary artists. The Pigeon’s Auction for Children Affected by Katrina

Those who create works for children--renowned children's Authors, Illustrators, and Television Creators--are donating items to benefit the children affected by Hurricane Katrina in an on-line auction of original art, signed books, and signed memorabilia. All proceeds will go into a fund for children run by The Foundations for Recovery (http://www.foundationsforrecovery.org).
