2007 Conference FAQ

Here’s some basic and miscellaneous information about SCBWI New England’s annual conference in Nashua on 18-20 May 2007.

• Can I register online?
No, we can’t offer that option. We’ve looked into some simple (i.e., affordable) online commerce programs, and they were too simple to accommodate our conferences, with so many options people can sign up for. We’ll continue to look for the best online recourse.

• Why haven't I received a brochure yet?
The brochures are at the printers and will be out in the mail shortly.

• Some of the information on the website is different from what is in the printed brochure. What gives?
This website is more up to date. (Which doesn’t mean it’s perfect.) If a speaker’s schedule changes so that he or she cannot attend the conference, we’ll announce that here.

• I want to become a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators so I can pay the lower registration costs. How do I do that?
You can sign up through the organization’s central website.

• This will be my first writing conference, and there’s so much happening I don’t know what to choose or where to go. Help!
We’ve all been in that situation. Two things can make your conference more enjoyable and productive. When thinking about workshops, look for options that are intended for "Beginners" or "All." When you arrive on Saturday morning, look for the New Member Table during the registration period. There you’ll find volunteers who can answer questions about SCBWI, your schedule, conference packet, or critique assignment.

• I just had my first book published. Can I have it on sale at the conference?
Congratulations, but no. The conference bookstore will offer books by conference presenters or about the craft or business of creating books for children. But with so many writers and illustrators attending, the store can’t stock everyone’s titles. There are two ways within the Saturday conference to show off your book to other attendees. First, you can bring one copy for the Member Book Display. Second, you can donate a copy as a Door Prize for the end of the day.

• I’d like to volunteer for next year’s conference, or propose a workshop. How do I do that?
Great! At the conference we’ll announce next year’s director, who can take your name. We’ll post a call for workshop proposals on this website later this year. But first all the organizers have to take a long nap.
